ANNUAL REPORT OF ART ADVISORY COMMITTEE
GLOUCESTER LYCEUM & SAWYER FREE LIBRARY
2008-2009

The Annual Silent Art Auction took place during the month of November in the Matz Gallery. This year we set the allowable entry to one painting per artist which simplified spacelimitations and labor hours. Sixty-eight paintings were contributed by sixty-eight artists. The Final Live Auction took place on the Library’s Main Floor on the evening of December 3rd with approximately ninety patrons in attendance. For the tenth consecutive year Jack Goode volunteered as auctioneer. While most artists donate their works at 50%, ten artists donated 100% of the proceeds to the Library.
The Art Auction continues to raise money for the library’s Art Department for art related items such as DVDs, shelving, books, museum passes and programs. The Art Advisory Committee supported the installation of the two granite sculptures, created and donated to the Library by Martin Ray, and funded by a grant to Martin from seARTS.  They portray Charles Olson and Vincent Ferrini.  The pedestals were made by Jay McLauchlan who generously donated his time while the committee provided the materials. Auction proceeds are also used to purchase museum passes to the MFA and the Isabel Stewart Gardner Museum.
The Art Advisory Committee contributes to the Mimi Ferrini Scholarship Fund for Cape Ann high school seniors pursuing an education in the arts. This years recipients of the $500 scholarships awards were Samuel R. Curtis and Chloe Rideout.
Over the last ten years a significant amount of money has been raised for the Library. The 2009 Art Auction will be on December 2, 2009 at 7:00 PM.
