The Library Director

Jenny Benedict

Jenny Benedict was appointed Director of the Gloucester Lyceum and Sawyer Free Library in July 2020. She is committed to anticipating and responding to the changing needs of our community with library resources, services and spaces that advance opportunity and equity.

Jenny has 17 years of leadership experience in public libraries, previously serving as the Director of the West Vancouver Memorial Library, British Columbia and the Interim and Deputy Chief Librarian of the Hartford Public Library, CT.  At West Vancouver Memorial Library, she initiated multiple capital projects to extend the lifespan of the historic and multi-generational facility and to address emerging space needs. Achievements included the launch of The Lab, an innovative, digital learning space designed for active participation and social interaction, and the introduction of innovative programming. During her tenure, she increased financial awards to the Library with over $6 million in capital funding.

Benedict received her Master’s Degree in Information and Library Science and a Graduate Academic Certificate in Advanced Management in Libraries and Information Agencies from the University of North Texas. She also holds a Master’s of Arts in English from the University of Houston and a Bachelor’s in Journalism from the University of Texas at Austin. She is a member of the American Library Association and the Massachusetts Library Association.

Over the last five years, she has been a driving force behind the design, construction and furnishing of the 2025 Sawyer Free Library. She serves as the Chair of the SFL Renovation and Addition City Building Committee, the Library’s primary representative on the Owner/Architect/Construction Management Team, and the contract manager for the financial administration of the major capital project. Jenny is passionate about sustainability and accessibility, ensuring that both the building and grounds are both and inclusive to all
