Getting a Library Card
Getting a library card is a quick and easy process. Our Borrower’s Services Staff will be happy to help.
Getting Your Sawyer Free Library Card
Getting a card starts when you come to the Borrower’s Services desk on the main floor of the library. You’ll be asked to fill out a short form, as well as present identification.
Any of the following forms of identification with your name and current Gloucester address:
Valid U.S. Driver’s License
Valid U.S. Learner’s Permit
Valid Massachusetts ID
Checkbook or Bankbook
Utility Bill (in your name)
If your identification, such as your driver’s license, does not have your current Gloucester address, be sure to bring along a second proof of address in the form of one of the documents listed.
If you already have a card issued by another NOBLE library, you may use that card at Sawyer Free Library without registering for a new card.
Children aged five (5) and older do not need identification to get a library card. A parent of guardian must accompany the child and sign a consent form.
You may use your library card to check out, request, and renew items, as well as log onto the public computers and reserve museum passes. If you forget to bring your card, please have your identification ready so we can look up your record.
Non-Circulating + Electronic Access Cards
If you do not have proof of address or present a Gloucester Municipal Identification Card, you can apply for a non-circulating + electronic access card. This card will allow you to use our public internet computers, access our online research resource databases, and check out electronic resources from our OverDrive and Hoopla Digital libraries.
Non circulating cards will be upgraded to circulating cards with proof of address.
Please let us know at the main desk if you have misplaced your library card. We will issue a new card free of charge.
Renewing an Expired Card
Your library card will expire three (3) years after the date it was issued. This allows us to confirm your contact information and update it if it has changed. To renew your card simply call the Borrowers Services Desk at 978-281-9763 ex. 10 or visit in person.
Non-circulating + electronic access cards expire one (1) year after the date they are issued.
There are a number of electronic materials and databases your library card will allow you to access, including your account where you can renew and request items.
You can access your account online by signing in via the Log In tab on the Sawyer Free Library website menu. Sign in by entering your library card number and PIN (the last four digits of your library card number). You may change your PIN by request at the main desk.
Your card allows you to request material from any NOBLE library. Simply search all NOBLE libraries and place a hold using your library card number and PIN. Alternatively, our Information Services staff will be happy to help you place a hold in person or via phone.
You may request materials from Massachusetts libraries outside of the NOBLE system through Commonwealth Catalog using your library card number and PIN. Alternatively, our Information Services staff will be happy to help you place a hold in person or via phone.
