Jenny Benedict

Jenny Benedict was appointed Director of the Gloucester Lyceum and Sawyer Free Library in July 2020. She is committed to anticipating and responding to the changing needs of our community with library resources, services and spaces that advance opportunity and equity.

Jenny has 14 years of leadership experience in public libraries, previously serving as the Director of the West Vancouver Memorial Library, British Columbia and the Interim and Deputy Chief Librarian of the Hartford Public Library, CT.  At West Vancouver Memorial Library, she initiated multiple capital projects to extend the lifespan of the historic and multi-generational facility and to address emerging space needs. Achievements included the launch of The Lab, an innovative, digital learning space designed for active participation and social interaction, and the introduction of innovative programming. During her tenure, she increased financial awards to the Library with over $6 million in capital funding.

Benedict received her Master’s Degree in Information and Library Science and a Graduate Academic Certificate in Advanced Management in Libraries and Information Agencies from the University of North Texas. She also holds a Master’s of Arts in English from the University of Houston and a Bachelor’s in Journalism from the University of Texas at Austin.

Jenny is passionate about sustainability and accessibility and serves on the North of Boston Library Exchange (NOBLE) Sustainability Committee. She is a member of the American Library Association and the Massachusetts Library Association.
